18K Gold Price Per Gram: How to Calculate It and What You'll Actually Pay or Get
The market side is simple arithmetic. 18k gold (also called 18 karat) is 75% pure, so its price per gram is 75% of the 24k price. What a ring or chain costs in a store is that metal value plus labor, design, stones, and the jeweler's margin. This guide gives you the formula to calculate 18k gold price, then uses it to check a quote and to estimate what your own gold would fetch.
Quick answer: To find the 18k gold price per gram, divide the gold spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035, then multiply by 0.75. 18k gold is 75% pure (750 fineness), so each gram contains 0.75 grams of pure gold. That figure is metal value only. Jewelry prices add labor, stones, margin, and tax.
Today's 18K Gold Price Per Gram
Gold trades worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce, and that spot price is the starting point for every per-gram figure you'll see. It fluctuates throughout the trading day, so a price typed into an article is out of date within hours. Use the live table below for the current number, then apply the formula in the next section to price any weight of 18k gold.”

Prices represent estimated gold-content value based on spot gold. 24K is calculated as 100% gold, 18K as 75%, and 14K as 58.33%. Actual jewelry prices and gold-buying offers can differ because of alloy composition, workmanship, dealer premiums, taxes, fees, and buyer spreads.
Keep one thing in mind when you read that table: it shows what the metal is worth, nothing more. It doesn't include the labor charge behind making a chain, the diamonds in a ring, a store's overhead, or sales tax. For a benchmark behind the number, the LBMA Gold Price is set twice each trading day in London and is widely used as a reference. Dealers and price sites quote their own rates around it.
How to Calculate 18K Gold Price Per Gram (Formula and Example)
Three steps get you there:
-
Start with the current spot price of gold per troy ounce.
-
Divide by 31.1035, the number of grams in a troy ounce. The result is the price of one gram of pure 24k gold.
-
Multiply by 0.75.
The 0.75 comes straight from the karat system. 18k means 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, and 18 ÷ 24 = 0.75.
A worked example
Say gold trades at $3,000 per troy ounce. That is a round number chosen to keep the arithmetic easy, not today's price. Divided by 31.1035, it gives about $96.45 per gram of pure gold. Multiply by 0.75, and 18k gold comes to about $72.34 per gram. A 10-gram 18k chain would therefore hold roughly $723 worth of gold. In the examples further down, We'll round that to $72 per gram.
-
A quick sanity check: Your 18k figure should always come out at exactly three-quarters of the 24k figure.
18K Gold Price Per Ounce, Pennyweight, and 10 Grams
Dealers and buyers don’t all quote in grams, so here is the same example in other units. Gold is weighed in troy ounces (31.1035 g), not the regular ounce (about 28.35 g), and using the wrong one overstates the price by roughly 10%. US jewelers and buyers also use pennyweights (dwt); a pennyweight is about 1.5552 g, and a troy ounce holds 20.

One more distinction trips people up: karat measures purity, while carat measures gemstone weight (1 carat = 0.2 g). When you weigh a stone-set piece for its gold, account for the gem’s weight.
18K Gold Price Per Gram vs 10K, 14K, 22K, and 24K
The karat number tells you how much pure gold is in each gram. The more gold it contains, the more the metal is worth. Here’s how different gold purities compare using an example gold price of $3,000 per troy ounce.

Why the Real Price Gap Between 18K and 14K Is Bigger Than It Looks
18K gold contains about 29% more pure gold per gram than 14K gold. It also weighs a little more than the same ring made in 14K because gold is denser than the other metals mixed with it. That means you pay for both more gold and a heavier ring, so the total price difference is bigger than the per-gram price difference alone.
In return, you get a richer yellow color and more pure gold, but the metal is a little softer and can scratch more easily. Read our 18K vs. 14K gold comparison to see which is right for you.
Why 18K Gold Jewelry Costs More Than the Gold Price Per Gram
Metal value is the floor price. A finished piece stacks several other costs on top of it:
|
Layer |
What it covers |
|
Metal |
Gold weight × the 18k rate you just learned to calculate |
|
Labor and manufacturing cost |
Casting or fabrication, setting stones, finishing, polishing, quality control |
|
Stones cost |
Diamonds or gemstones, priced separately by size and quality |
|
Brand and retail margin |
Design, store overhead, marketing, the jeweler's margin |
|
Tax |
Sales tax, which varies by state |
Many US retailers give you one final price that includes the gold, labor, and profit. Custom jewelers may list each cost separately. In countries such as India and the Gulf states, the bill may show a separate making charge for the work involved. This is why dividing a diamond ring’s price by its weight doesn’t tell you much about the value of its gold.
Imagine two pieces that each weigh 10 grams: a plain gold chain and a diamond pendant. Both contain roughly $720 worth of gold. The chain’s price mainly covers the gold and the work needed to make it. The pendant costs more because you’re also paying for the diamonds, the work of setting them, and the design. That’s why its price per gram can be much higher.
Does white, yellow, or rose 18K gold cost differently?
All three contain 75% pure gold. The difference is in the other 25% of the metal mixture. Yellow gold usually contains silver and copper. Rose gold has more copper, which gives it a pinkish color. White gold contains metals such as palladium, nickel, or silver to make it look whiter. Palladium-based white gold can cost more to make. However, the gold itself has the same value in all three colors because each contains the same amount of pure gold.
How Much Is 18K Gold Worth When You Sell It?
Selling gold works in the opposite way from buying it. The price you pay for jewelry includes the cost of making it, the design, and the seller’s profit. When you sell it, buyers mainly pay for the gold itself.
-
Weigh the gold: Use a scale that measures grams, ideally to 0.01 g. Remove loose stones, and ask the buyer how they account for stones that are still set in the jewelry.
-
Check the gold purity: Look for a stamp such as 18K, 750, or 18ct. If there’s no stamp or you’re unsure, ask the buyer to test the gold.
-
Calculate the gold’s melt value: Multiply the weight by the 18K gold price per gram. For example, a 10 g chain at $72 per gram is worth about $720 in gold.
-
Get two or three offers: Ask each buyer how much they pay for the gold and what weight they have recorded.
-
Expect less than the melt value: Buyers deduct costs for testing and refining, along with their profit. The amount they deduct varies, so compare offers before selling.
Melt Value vs. Resale Value
Melt value is what the gold in your jewelry is worth based on its weight and purity. A scrap gold buyer usually pays for the gold itself, not the design. If your jewelry has a special design or comes from a well-known maker, you may be able to sell it for more than its melt value through a resale shop or consignment service. However, this depends on the piece and whether a buyer wants it. Some jewelers also let you trade in old jewelry for credit toward a new purchase. The amount they offer depends on their trade-in terms.
Is It Really 18K? Gold Marks That Affect the Price
Everything above assumes your jewelry is made of solid 18K gold. Stamps such as 18K, 18ct, and 750 all mean the piece contains 75% gold. Other marks mean something different. GP (gold plated), GF (gold filled), and HGE (heavy gold electroplate) mean the piece has a layer of gold over another metal. These pieces aren't solid 18K gold, so you can't value them at the 18K gold rate.
Keep in mind that a stamp alone doesn't prove what's inside the jewelry. A jeweler or gold buyer can test it to check its actual gold content. One common method is XRF testing, which checks the metal's composition without damaging the piece. If you're unsure about a stamp on your jewelry, get it tested before estimating its value.
Why the 18K Gold Price Keeps Changing
Gold prices change based on market demand and world events. Several things can affect the price, including interest rates, the strength of the US dollar, inflation, political conflicts, and how much gold central banks buy.
For example, when interest rates rise, some investors prefer investments that pay interest instead of gold. When people feel uncertain about the economy or world events, more of them may turn to gold, which can push its price up.
The World Gold Council publishes research explaining what affects gold prices and demand. If you're buying or selling gold, check the price on the day of your transaction. Use a reliable source that shows when the price was updated, and ask the jeweler or gold buyer which rate they used to calculate your price.
Is 18K Gold Jewelry a Good Way to Hold Gold?
It depends on what you want. Gold bars and coins are usually priced close to the current gold price, plus an extra charge from the seller. Most of what you pay goes toward the gold itself. Jewelry costs more because you also pay for making it, the design, and the seller's profit. When you sell it, you usually won't get those extra costs back. This makes 18K gold jewelry a less practical choice if your only goal is to invest in gold.
However, jewelry can make sense if you want something to wear and enjoy while still keeping some value in the gold itself. If your main goal is investment, compare the extra costs of buying gold bars or coins with the cost of buying and selling jewelry. Remember that this is general information, not financial advice.
