Princess Cut Diamond Rings for Women
A princess cut is a square diamond with sharp corners and brilliant faceting that fills the stone with sparkle. Square stones sit side by side without gaps, so most of this collection is eternity and half eternity bands, joined by princess engagement rings, statement rings and a wedding ring, all in yellow, white or rose gold.
More Diamond for the Money
A princess is cut from the rough with very little waste. Cutters typically keep around 80% of the crystal, compared with roughly 40 to 50% for a round brilliant, and that saving shows up in the price. A princess usually costs noticeably less per carat than a round of the same color and clarity. Our guide to princess cut vs round cut diamonds compares the two in detail.
Its square shape also changes how size reads. A 1 carat princess measures about 5.5 mm along each side, smaller across than a 1 carat round at about 6.4 mm, but its corner-to-corner diagonal is close to 7.8 mm. Other common sizes are about 4.4 mm per side at half a carat, 6.3 mm at 1.5 carats, 7.0 mm at 2 carats and 8.0 mm at 3 carats.
Four Corners to Protect
The sharp corners that give a princess its crisp look are also its weak points. A corner is the thinnest part of the stone, and a hard knock there can chip it. Every princess ring should cover all four.
On solitaire and pavé engagement rings, a V-shaped prong wraps each corner. A bezel rims the whole square in metal, and a halo puts a border of small diamonds and metal between the corners and the world. In eternity bands, stones set in a channel or a bezel have their corners tucked under metal on both sides.
Princess Eternity and Half Eternity Bands
Round stones in a row leave small triangular gaps between them. Square princess stones meet edge to edge, so a princess band reads as one unbroken strip of sparkle. That's why eternity bands make up most of this collection.
They're made in several ways:
- Lab-grown diamond, in stone widths from about 3 mm to 4.75 mm, in full eternity and bezel-set designs.
- Natural black diamond, using natural diamonds that are color-treated, on their own or alternating with white lab-grown diamonds. See more black diamond rings.
- Lab-created gemstones, in ruby, blue sapphire or green emerald, as solid bands of one stone.
- Diamond and gemstone, either alternating stone by stone or split half and half around the band.
Full eternity bands carry stones all the way around, while half eternity bands keep them across the top for comfort and easier resizing. Read about stacking them in our half eternity rings stacking guide, or browse every half eternity ring and our eternity wedding bands. Choosing a Princess Stone
Most princess diamonds are close to square, with a length-to-width ratio of about 1.00 to 1.05. Some are cut slightly rectangular, which isn't a flaw but does change the look, so check the ratio if you want a perfect square.
Princess cuts are good at hiding small inclusions, thanks to their brilliant faceting, but color can collect in the corners. In white gold, it's worth choosing a color grade a step higher than you would for a round. In yellow or rose gold, the metal disguises a faint warm tone.

Colored Princess Diamonds
Princess diamonds also come in lab-grown fancy colors: pink, yellow, blue and green. The brilliant faceting spreads the color evenly across the square face. Browse our colored diamond rings for colored stones in every shape.
Natural, Lab-Grown and Certificates
Natural princess diamonds go up to 1 carat. Each natural diamond of 0.50 carat or more includes an IGI or GIA report, and smaller natural stones, such as most eternity band diamonds, carry no documentation.
Lab-grown princess diamonds go up to 3 carats. For anything bigger, contact us and we'll find a stone. Each lab-grown diamond of 1 carat or more includes an IGI report, and smaller lab-grown stones aren't individually certified.
Every ring priced over $800 also ships with an independent GSI jewelry certificate. Browse by origin in natural diamond rings and lab-grown diamond rings.
