Diamond Tennis Necklaces for Women

A tennis necklace is one continuous line of matched diamonds, each set in its own small link so the whole strand moves like fabric. Ours are lab-grown and run from 3.94 to 10.73 carats total, which is the number that most changes how a tennis necklace looks and feels. Each one is made to the length you choose when you order.

Total Weight, Stone by Stone

The carat weight on a tennis necklace is the total of every diamond on the strand, often more than a hundred of them. Because the length stays roughly the same, a higher weight mostly means bigger stones rather than more of them. As a rough guide for a 16 inch necklace, a total of about 4 carats works out to stones around 2 mm across, about 8 carats to stones near 2.7 mm, and about 11 carats to stones close to 3 mm. That difference of a single millimeter doesn't sound like much, but on a line of diamonds it changes the necklace from a fine, bright thread into a bold band of light.

Bigger stones also add weight and width. A lighter strand lies flat against the skin and slips under a collar; a heavier one sits more visibly on top of the collarbone and is felt when worn.

Around 4 Carats: The One You Forget You're Wearing

Our 3.94 carat round tennis necklace is the lightest in the collection. The stones are small enough that the strand drapes closely and doesn't catch on clothing, so it suits a work shirt or a knit as easily as an evening dress. It also layers well: worn high on the neck, it leaves room for a pendant on a longer chain below. If you want something lighter still, our diamond by the yard necklaces space single diamonds along a fine chain instead of setting them edge to edge.

8 to 11 Carats: Evening Weight

From around 8 carats, a tennis necklace becomes the main piece of an outfit rather than an accent. Our heavier strands are the 7.94 carat classic, an 8.61 carat design, the 9.55 carat round and the 10.73 carat necklace, our largest. At these weights the individual diamonds are clearly visible, and the necklace reads from across a room. They look strongest with an open neckline, such as a strapless, V-neck or off-shoulder dress, where nothing competes with the line of stones. Keep other jewelry simple: small studs and a single ring are usually enough.

The Tennis Y

Our 5.18 carat tennis Y-necklace takes the same continuous line and adds a short drop of diamonds hanging from the center. The drop points down the neckline, which lengthens the neck and makes the piece feel less formal than a straight strand of the same weight. It sits between the everyday and evening options, and suits a V-neck especially well.

Made to Your Length

Tennis necklaces aren't adjustable: there's no extender chain, because every link carries a diamond. Instead, you choose the length when you order and we make the necklace to it. A 16 inch strand sits at the base of the neck, close to the collarbone; 17 or 18 inches falls slightly lower and is easier to wear over a collar. Our necklace length guide shows where each length lands. A longer necklace needs more stones, so the total weight for your length may differ slightly from the listed one.

Every tennis necklace is offered in 10K, 14K or 18K yellow, white or rose gold. Some designs are also made in 925 sterling silver, depending on their size and construction; each product page shows which.

Why These Are Lab-Grown

At 4 to 11 carats of matched diamonds, the cost difference between lab-grown and natural is large. Lab-grown diamonds have the same hardness and sparkle, so a lab-grown strand gives you a fuller necklace for the same budget. Each stone is far too small to be graded on its own, but any piece priced over $800 includes a GSI jewelry certificate for the finished necklace. All six current designs are in our lab-grown tennis necklace collection, and more designs will be added soon.

Links, Clasps and Catches

A tennis necklace is only as secure as its clasp. Because a strand of diamonds is heavier than a plain chain, the closure matters more than on most necklaces. Clasp style varies by design: many use a box clasp, where a tongue clicks into a hollow box, and some add a safety catch such as a figure-eight latch for a second layer of security. Check the product page for the clasp on each design. It's also worth looking at the links themselves: each stone should sit in its own hinged setting, so the strand bends smoothly without kinks or gaps.

Matched With a Tennis Bracelet

The most natural pairing for a tennis necklace is a tennis bracelet in the same metal. Matching stone sizes makes a set; a finer bracelet with a heavier necklace also works, as long as the metal agrees. Our tennis bracelets include lab-grown diamond tennis bracelets that sit well alongside these necklaces.

FAQs

The name comes from the tennis bracelet. In the late 1980s a professional player's diamond line bracelet came loose during a televised match, and she asked for play to stop while she found it. The story spread, line bracelets became known as tennis bracelets, and the name later carried over to necklaces built the same way.

Lay it flat and lift one end: a well-made strand bends evenly at every link, with no stiff sections or gaps between stones. The diamonds should look matched in size and color along the whole length, and the clasp should close firmly. Our tennis necklace buying guide covers what to check in more detail.

Usually not. The links are set edge to edge with diamonds, so a pendant has nowhere to sit and would rub against the stones. Wear the pendant on its own chain instead, a couple of inches longer, as in our layered necklace collection.
