Why Are Mined Diamonds Considered Less Ethical?

Now that we know what factors make a diamond ethical, here's how natural and lab-grown diamonds compare on sustainability. One thing is certain: lab-grown diamonds don't require mining, land excavation, community displacement, heavy water usage, or barrels of fuel for excavation vehicles.
They're simply made within a controlled room, using the HPHT or CVD process. That doesn't mean every lab-grown diamond is automatically ethical; it just means one particular risk associated with mined diamonds is removed at the source. Production still requires energy in the form of electricity, and if that electricity comes from coal, the process isn't exactly clean either.
Lab-grown diamond production also doesn't expose workers to the dangerous conditions tied to extraction, heavy machinery, underground or open-pit operations, and other high-risk environments. But don't take that to mean lab-grown has no labor concerns. Labor ethics don't disappear; they just move to the manufacturing floor.

HPHT vs. CVD: Does the Production Method Matter?
Of course it does, because the two techniques work completely differently, and that difference shows up in how much energy each one burns.
HPHT grows a diamond by putting a small seed under extreme pressure and heat. Keeping those conditions going takes serious equipment, which is why electricity ends up being such a big part of its footprint. A 2021 study in MDPI looked at modern HPHT presses with efficient cooling systems and found they used around 36 kWh per carat.
CVD takes a different route. Rather than crushing the diamond into shape, it builds it up layer by layer inside a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. That same study actually found CVD used more energy overall, around 215 kWh per carat, mostly because the process runs continuously for days or even weeks instead of finishing in one intense burst like HPHT does.
These numbers shift depending on the study, the producer, and the equipment involved, so don't treat them as fixed. But the core point stays the same either way: both methods run on real electricity, and it's the source of that electricity, not which method was used, that ultimately decides whether the diamond can actually be called eco-friendly.
Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Actually Better for the Environment?
To know whether lab-grown diamonds are actually better for the environment, it helps to first understand why mined diamonds carry an environmental cost in the first place. The biggest concern is carbon emissions. According to a Trucost assessment of Diamond Producers Association members, producing one polished carat of mined diamond resulted in an average of 160 kg of CO₂e.
Electricity use and fossil fuels burned by vehicles, equipment, and machinery were found to be the main drivers of that number. So yes, mining a diamond does carry a real carbon footprint; it would be hard to call a process with that kind of emissions output completely environmentally friendly. But does that mean lab-grown diamonds are carbon-free? Not at all.
Growing a diamond in a lab still takes electricity. The machines that grow the stone need power to run, and depending on how that power is generated, the process can produce real greenhouse-gas emissions of its own. In its own supplier assessment, Pandora found that electricity used during the diamond-growing stage accounted for roughly 70% of a lab-grown diamond's total carbon footprint.
The report also confirmed that both the electricity source and the amount of power needed per carat were the biggest factors shaping the final number. So the real question isn't "mined or lab-grown"; it's how much carbon was emitted to produce the specific diamond, and where the electricity came from. A lab-grown diamond made on a coal-heavy grid can't fairly be called sustainable. One made with renewable electricity is a genuinely different story.
Land and Habitat Impact
This is where lab-grown diamonds have a much clearer environmental advantage. A 2024 peer-reviewed study published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications examined the environmental impacts of the global diamond industry and identified greenhouse-gas emissions, mineral waste, and water use as major environmental indicators associated with diamond production.
The study estimates that diamond mining can generate 2.63 tonnes of mineral waste per carat under the production assumptions it used. Lab-created diamonds do not need diamond-bearing rock to be excavated and processed to recover the stone.
What About the People Who Depend on Diamond Mining?
It is easy to look at the environmental damage caused by mining and conclude that replacing mined diamonds with lab-grown diamonds is automatically better. But what happens to the people and countries that depend on diamond mining for their livelihoods?
Diamond mining can create jobs, generate government revenue, support local businesses, and contribute to economic development when the industry is responsibly managed. Botswana is a good example. The World Bank says the country's diamond wealth helped improve its economy and people's living conditions, and diamond mining has historically been a major source of export earnings and government revenue.
That doesn't mean diamond mining is automatically good for every community. The benefits can vary depending on how mining revenue is distributed, how workers are treated, and whether local communities actually benefit from the industry.
But it does give us something important to think about.
If more consumers move from natural diamonds to lab-grown diamonds, the question isn't only “Will we reduce the environmental impact of mining?”

Does the Kimberley Process Make Mined Diamonds Ethical?
The Kimberley Process was created to stop conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate diamond trade. It was launched in 2003 after concerns that diamond revenues were being used by rebel groups to finance armed conflicts. Today, the Kimberley Process covers only the rough-diamond trade between participating countries. It tells you that the rough diamond has passed through a certification system designed to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate trade.
If a jeweler tells you that a natural diamond is “Kimberley Process certified,” don't take that as meaning the stone has passed every possible ethical test. It is better to think of the Kimberley Process as one layer of protection against conflict diamonds, not a universal “ethical diamond” certificate.
Can a Mined Diamond Be More Ethical Than a Lab-Grown Diamond?
Yes, a mined diamond can be more ethical than a lab-grown diamond.
That may sound strange after everything we have discussed so far.
