Engagement season, sometimes called proposal season, is the time period stretching from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day, when a large share of proposals happen. About 47% of couples get engaged in this time window, according to The Knot's 2025 Real Weddings Study. December is the busiest engagement month, and Christmas Day is the most popular day to propose.

That's the pattern we have. Whether it should be your pattern is a separate question, and the answer to that question decides how soon you need to choose and order a ring. This guide explains why this season is the engagement season, which holiday moment fits for your engagement.

What Is Engagement Season, and How Big Is It?

Engagement season covers a little under three months. This year it runs from Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2026, through Valentine's Day on Sunday, February 14, 2027.

In The Knot's 2026 study, based on 10,474 US couples who married in 2025, December was the top month, with Christmas Day first, Christmas Eve second, and Valentine's Day third. An earlier Knot analysis found that all five of the most popular proposal days fell inside the season: Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, New Year's Day, December 22, and Valentine's Day. It also found that December alone accounted for 19% of proposals.

The pattern does not show only America following this engagement season. The Knot reports that engagement season peaks in December in the U.S., U.K., Brazil, and Mexico as well.

Why Do So Many Proposals Happen Between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day?

It is mostly because of romance and convenience. But there's more underneath, and some of it is better supported than the rest.

    • Time and people: The holidays bring days off work and relatives under one roof. That makes it easier to celebrate engagement right away and to tell the people who do matter in person.
    • Dates that already mean something: Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's Day arrive with a default sense of occasion and meaning.
    • Planning logic: The average engagement lasts about 15 months, according to The Knot. A proposal in winter leaves a long runway before the next peak wedding season of late spring through early fall, which is one reason couples who want a seasonal wedding often work backward from it. That's a plausible contributor, not a proven one.
    • The shopping calendar: Holiday gifting, sales and advertising put engagement rings in front of people at exactly this time of year.

Is Engagement Season Right for You?

Engagement season’s popularity doesn't tell you whether it is the perfect time for you to propose or get engaged. To know the answer five questions:

    • Have you talked about getting married? If you both already want to get married, you can choose a special date to propose. If you haven’t talked about marriage yet, don’t propose just because it’s the holiday season.

    • Does your partner like big celebrations or private moments? Some people love getting proposed to around family. Others prefer a quiet, private moment with just the two of you.

    • Will the proposal take attention away from Christmas? Christmas is already busy with gifts, food, family, and travel. Proposing a few days before or after Christmas might make the engagement feel more special.

    • Do you have enough time to get the ring? Make sure you have enough time to choose and buy the ring before your planned proposal date.

    • Are you choosing this date because you want to, or because you feel pressured? Seeing lots of engagement announcements can make you feel like you should propose too. But you don’t have to follow everyone else.

If the Answer Is “Not This Season”

You don’t have to propose during the holiday season. There’s no fixed rule about when you should get engaged.

    • You can propose any time of the year. People get engaged in spring, summer, fall, and winter.

    • You don’t need to rush. Some people plan their proposal less than a month in advance.

    • Shopping for a ring may be less stressful outside the holiday season. You won’t feel as much pressure to buy it before Christmas.

    • You have other options. You can choose a different month that feels more special to you and your partner.

Mainly: Don’t rush your proposal just because it’s engagement season. Wait until you’re ready and choose a time that feels right.

Listen: If you feel ready to propose to your partner, thank God for bringing you to this moment! But don’t go unprepared. Simply bringing a ring is a basic idea, but you can make the moment much more special. Working Backward: Your Ring and Proposal Timeline

Choosing the date and season for your proposal is easy compared to deciding where to buy your engagement ring. But the ring matters when choosing your proposal date, too!

A ready-made ring can take about two weeks to prepare and another two weeks to arrive at your doorstep. So, if you want to propose on Thanksgiving, you need to plan to make sure your ring arrives on time.

According to The Knot’s 2026 study, 57% of people start looking for a ring more than six months before proposing, while 63% buy their ring within two months of the proposal. This means people often start looking early but make their final purchase later.

The most important date isn't when you start looking for a ring. It's the day you actually order it. Only 22% of couples choose and buy their ring less than a month before proposing. This usually means choosing a ring that's already made and available to buy.

If you want to plan your proposal quickly, try to order your ring at least six weeks in advance. This gives you enough time for the ring to be prepared and delivered. If you've left it too late, don't worry! Read our guide, Last-Minute Wedding Band Shopping, to learn what you can do.

Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Holiday Sales: What to Know Before You Buy

Black Friday is November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday is November 30, 2026. Many stores offer discounts on these days, but not every deal saves you a lot of money. Some stores offer discounts of 15%–30%, but sometimes the discount applies only to the ring setting or the diamond, not the whole ring.

But with Diagaa, you don't have to worry about that! Unlike Apple's pricing strategy (just kidding!), we offer a flat 35% discount on the entire product, not just the setting or the diamond. Explore our wedding band collection, compare designs, check out different metal colors, and enjoy great savings with all the relevant certificates included.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Keep the ring somewhere your partner won't accidentally find it. Avoid shared closets, bags they use, or coat pockets they might check. If the ring is being delivered, send it to an address where you can safely receive it. Also, tell only a few trusted people about your plan to avoid spoiling the surprise.

Yes, it's a good idea to insure the ring as soon as you buy it. This can help protect you if the ring gets lost, stolen, or damaged before the proposal. You can add it to your home or renters insurance or buy separate jewelry insurance. Check with the insurance company to understand the cost, what is covered, and whether the ring is protected while travelling.

That's completely fine! You don't need to celebrate Christmas to enjoy engagement season. Choose a date that is special to you and your partner, such as your anniversary, the day you first met, another holiday you celebrate, or even an ordinary day. Just remember to order the ring early enough for your chosen date.

Always keep the ring in your carry-on bag or a secure pocket instead of your checked luggage. You can use a small, simple pouch to hide the ring and make it easier to carry. Before travelling, check that your insurance covers the ring during your trip, and keep any important receipts or documents with you.
