In our October birthstone guide, we picked up opal and peeled back all of its layers. This time, we’re picking one baby from the opal family: fire opal. As the name suggests, fire opal doesn’t throw flames or start fires, jokes aside. But it does make you feel like there’s a fire burning somewhere inside it. It’s a semi-precious, easily available stone, and if you love fashion jewelry with a warm, glowing color, fire opal can be a great pick. So let’s peel back the layers of fire opal and see what kind of fire it really has. What Is Fire Opal? Opal is hydrated silica: silicon dioxide with water locked inside it. Unlike most gemstones, it has no crystal structure, which is why gemologists call it amorphous. Fire opal is a member of the opal family known for its body color. Most of us picture opal as the stone with rainbow flashes dancing inside it. That effect is called play-of-color, and it occurs in the precious opal.  Fire opal’s fire is different. It’s the color of the stone, glowing as if it were lit from behind. Most fire opal doesn’t show play-of-color at all, and the stones that do are the exception and generally valued higher. Opal without play-of-color is called common opal, and fire opal falls in that group when it lacks the fire effect. Fire opal colors Fire opal comes in a range of colors. Out of them all, yellow fire opals are the lightest; they seem honey-toned. Orange is the classic. Red, sometimes called cherry, is the deepest and the most unique fire opal. The fire opal with a richer and even shade is worth more.  Fire Opal Meaning, History and Birthstone Status Opal is October’s traditional birthstone, shared with tourmaline in modern lists recognized by organizations such as the American Gem Society. Fire opal is a variety of opal, so it sits comfortably under that umbrella.  In popular tradition, fire opal is linked with passion, energy, and creativity. Stories often tie the stone to the Aztecs, and Mexico’s long history with fire opal is real. The details of those stories vary from source to source, so we’d treat them as lore rather than documented fact. Where Fire Opal Comes From Mexico is the best-known source for fire opal. Querétaro is one of the most famous areas. A cutter quoted by GIA has said Mexican fire opal is the only opal mined in quantity that’s clear enough to be faceted like a conventional gemstone.  Ethiopia is a relatively newer source of opal, and fire opal from Ethiopia comes in warm orange tones with stronger play-of-color than Mexican stones usually show. Much of it is hydrophane, meaning it absorbs water and can look different when wet, and it has a reputation for crazing more readily. Brazil also produces fire opal, generally in lighter yellow to orange tones. How to Judge Fire Opal Quality Fire opal doesn’t have a universally used grading scale as diamonds do. Some sources apply the “four Cs” to it, but that’s a borrowed idea, not a standard used for industry as universal laws. To judge the quality of fire opal, you have to judge it with your own eyes. Body color: Look for an even shade. Deeper and more saturated orange and red colors usually cost more than pale stones, and patchy color zoning also brings the value down. Transparency: Clear stones are the ones that can be faceted, and they’re the classic fire opal look with higher cost. Translucent or hazy stones are often cut as cabochons with lower cost.  Clarity and cracks: Hold the stone under a bright light and look inside. What you should not see is crazing, a web of fine cracks that can spread over time.  Cut: A good cut shows the color evenly, with a smooth polish and clean edges.  Play-of-color: If a fire opal also flashes with other colors, that’s a bonus that can raise its value.  Size: Opal is lighter than most gemstones, so a one-carat fire opal looks larger than a one-carat diamond. Fire Opal Value and Price Honestly speaking, fire opal pricing is a bit of a jungle. Search for the price per carat for fire opal, and you’ll find different sources suggesting different prices. So we are not quoting the exact price here.  And you too: treat any figure you read online as a ballpark, not a quote. Always check the parameters we discussed in the previous section; those parameters are what stay steady and move the price in either direction. Is Fire Opal Durable Enough for Jewelry? This is the question to answer before falling for a ring. Again, on different sources, you will have different opinions about fire opal’s jewelry compatibility. Some call fire opal fine for daily jewelry; others say save it for special occasions. Both are partly right, because durability isn’t one thing to consider; there are three actually that decide if a stone can be worn daily or not. A quick rinse or handwashing won’t hurt ordinary Mexican fire opal.  But long soaking, hot water, swimming pools and hot tubs, and salt water must be avoided. Hydrophane stones need extra care, since soaking can change how they look.  The water content of Mexican fire opal is roughly 3 to 8 percent, well below Ethiopian hydrophane material at up to 21 percent. That suggests that Mexican fire opal has an edge over Ethiopian fire opal in terms of durability. Choosing Fire Opal Jewelry Despite knowing that fire opal is not strong enough to be daily-wear jewelry, you can have fire opal jewelry.
