Hard-Stone Inlay According to Esquire’s report from Las Vegas, hard stones such as lapis, carnelian, malachite, and mother-of-pearl are appearing in jewelry designs in place of enamel. The report also noted growing interest in inlay, a technique in which stones are cut to fit into the metal.  Stone inlay can make a wide wedding band stand out, as the extra space allows for larger designs.  Neo Deco Geometry Pinterest’s 2026 trend report, based on searches from September 2023 through August 2025, named Neo Deco as a trend that gives Art Deco a sleeker, more modern look. Why Bands Are Getting Bolder: Fashion Week and Menswear Bold jewelry was gaining popularity, with shoppers looking for accessories that express their personal style and feel worth collecting. Pinterest’s trend forecast points to the same shift, predicting jewelry that is bigger, bolder, and more gold-toned. Men’s jewelry is becoming more adventurous, too. Men who once wore little beyond a watch and wedding band are now adding colored gemstones and brooches. Pinterest also recorded a 90 percent increase in searches for brooches worn on men’s suits. A princess-cut diamond ring is a great choice, but there are two things you should look for: how well the diamond sparkles and how well its four corners are protected. Not all princess-cut diamonds sparkle the same way. Two diamonds can have the same carat weight, color, clarity, and type of certificate, yet look completely different. One may shine brightly across the whole stone, while the other has dull spots because light escapes through the bottom. With round diamonds, a lab’s cut grade can help you judge how well a diamond will sparkle. With princess-cut diamonds, you usually need to look beyond the grade. The other thing to consider is the diamond’s shape. Its sharp, square corners give it a clean, modern look, but they can also chip more easily if they get knocked. The good news is that you can avoid these issues by choosing carefully. Pick a diamond that sparkles well and a setting that protects its corners. You’ll get a beautiful, bright square diamond that can also cost less per carat than a round diamond of similar quality. Is a Princess Cut Diamond Ring Right for You? A princess-cut diamond is square, though some are slightly rectangular. Its many facets reflect light and give it plenty of sparkle, while its four pointed corners create a modern look. It is also known as a square modified brilliant. This diamond shape works well in several ring styles, including solitaire, halo, and three-stone settings.  What makes the princess cut stand out is its geometric shape. Unlike the softer curves of round and oval diamonds, it has a bold appearance while still offering plenty of sparkle. Princess-cut diamonds are also less popular than they once were. Recent surveys from The Knot suggest that they account for around 8% to 10% of engagement rings, putting them well behind round and oval diamonds.  How to Choose the Princess Diamond: Five Checks That Matter  The 4Cs- carat, cut, color, and clarity- matter for princess-cut diamonds just as they do for any other diamond. But this shape has a few extra things to consider. These five checks will help you understand what separates a high-quality diamond from one that may not look as good as you expect. 1. Cut quality: What the certificate doesn't tell you Cut quality affects how a diamond reflects light and how much it sparkles. A well-cut diamond looks bright and lively, while a poorly cut one can appear dull. Of the 4Cs, cut has the greatest effect on sparkle. For round diamonds, GIA provides a cut grade ranging from Excellent to Poor. This helps you judge how well a diamond is cut. However, GIA's overall cut grade applies to round brilliant diamonds, not princess cuts. A GIA report for a princess-cut diamond includes polish and symmetry grades. These tell you how well the diamond's surfaces and facets have been finished, but they don't show how well the stone reflects light. Some other grading labs have offered cut grades for princess-cut diamonds and other fancy shapes. AGS Laboratories introduced a light-performance cut grade for princess cuts in 2005, while IGI and GCAL have also offered cut grades for fancy shapes.  Because grading services can change, check what the report for your diamond actually covers. If the certificate doesn't include a cut grade, or you're comparing several diamonds, these three steps can help: Look for an independent cut grade: If your budget allows, choose a diamond that has been assessed for cut quality by a grading lab that offers this service. Ask for an ASET image or a clear video: An ASET image uses different colors to show how a diamond handles light. A well-performing princess cut should have a balanced pattern without large areas that appear dark or washed out. A video also lets you see how the diamond sparkles as it moves. Use the diamond's measurements as a starting point: Its proportions can help you narrow down your options, but they don't tell the whole story. If a seller gives a diamond an “Excellent” cut rating based only on its measurements, don't assume it will have great sparkle. Look at its light performance, too. These measurements can help you compare princess-cut diamonds and narrow down your options. Use these numbers to narrow down your choices, but don't rely on them alone. A diamond can fall within all the recommended ranges and still lack sparkle. An ASET image or a clear video can help you see how well the stone handles light. One common rule of thumb is to choose a diamond with a table percentage smaller than its depth percentage. This can be a useful starting point, but it doesn't guarantee good sparkle. 2. Shape: How square is the diamond? A length-to-width ratio between 1.00 and 1.05 usually means a diamond looks square. To calculate the ratio, divide the longer measurement by the shorter one. For example, a diamond measuring 5.50 mm by 5.90 mm has a ratio of about 1.07. This means it will look slightly rectangular rather than perfectly square. Adding smaller diamonds on either side of the center stone can make it look wider. If you like this style, see the diamond in its setting before making a decision. A slightly rectangular diamond shape may even help you save money 3. Corners: Check for weak spots and inclusions The girdle is the narrow edge around a diamond where the top and bottom meet. On a princess-cut diamond, this edge can be very thin at the four corners, making them more likely to chip if the ring gets knocked. Ask about the girdle thickness at the corners and check for any flaws nearby. One thing to look for is a feather, a small crack-like mark inside the diamond. If it extends toward a corner, it may make that area more likely to chip. A small crystal inclusion near the center of the diamond is generally less concerning when it comes to durability. The good news is that princess-cut diamonds can hide small flaws well because of the way their facets are arranged. The prongs that cover the corners may also hide minor flaws in those areas. Many retailers recommend SI1 clarity as a good balance between appearance and price. However, a clarity grade alone won't tell you whether a diamond looks clean to the naked eye. Every stone is different, so check it in a clear, high-quality video to see whether any flaws are visible. 4. Color: Check the corners carefully Princess-cut diamonds can show more color around the corners than in the center. A diamond may look bright and white in the middle but have a slight yellow or warm tint near the edges. The metal you choose for the ring can affect how noticeable this tint is. White gold and platinum can make yellow tones easier to see, so choosing a higher color grade may be worth the extra cost. Yellow and rose gold can blend better with a diamond that has a slight warm tint, allowing you to choose a lower color grade and potentially save money. If your ring includes smaller diamonds alongside the center stone, try to choose stones with a similar color. This helps the ring look more even. 5. Carat weight vs. how large the diamond looks You may hear that a princess-cut diamond looks larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight. But that isn't always the case. Its visible size depends on how the diamond is cut. Carat weight tells you how much a diamond weighs, not how large it looks from above. A diamond that is cut too deep carries more of its weight underneath, where you can't see it when looking at the ring. As a result, two one-carat princess-cut diamonds can look different in size when worn. Before buying, compare their measurements in millimeters and their length-to-width ratios instead of relying on carat weight alone. The reason is simple: being hard to scratch doesn't mean a diamond can't chip.
