Emerald Rings for Women

Our emerald rings are set with lab-created emeralds, mostly in eternity and half eternity bands. Some use emeralds alone, and others alternate them with lab-grown diamonds. Emerald is a softer, more delicate stone than diamond or sapphire, so this page also covers how to choose a setting and look after the ring.

Looking for an emerald-cut diamond instead? That is a diamond shape, not the green gemstone. See our emerald cut diamond rings.

What Is a Lab-Created Emerald?

Emerald is a green variety of the mineral beryl. Its color comes from small amounts of chromium, and sometimes vanadium, inside the crystal. A lab-created emerald is grown from the same ingredients, usually in a sealed vessel over several months, so it has the same chemistry, hardness and color as a mined emerald.

The differences show up in practice:

  • Clearer stones. Mined emeralds almost always have visible inclusions. Lab-created ones are usually much cleaner.
  • No oil filling. Most mined emeralds are treated with oil or resin to hide surface-reaching cracks. Lab-created emeralds normally don't need it.
  • Matched color. In a band with many stones, the greens line up closely from one stone to the next.
  • Lower cost. A full row of saturated green costs far less than the same row of mined emeralds.

How Durable Is an Emerald Ring?

Emerald scores 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale. It resists everyday scratches reasonably well, but it is more brittle than diamond or sapphire and can chip if it is knocked hard against a door frame or a countertop.

That does not rule it out for daily wear. It means the setting and the habits matter:

  • Bezel and channel settings wrap metal around the stones and protect their edges.
  • Half eternity bands keep emeralds off the underside of the finger, where they take the most knocks.
  • Take the ring off for the gym, gardening, cleaning and anything else that is hard on your hands.

Our Emerald Ring Styles

All-emerald eternity bands. Green stones set all the way around. See lab-grown emerald rings.

Emerald and diamond bands. Emeralds alternating with lab-grown diamonds, or one half green and one half white. The diamonds brighten the band and break up the color. See emerald wedding bands.

Half eternity rings. Emeralds across the top only, with plain gold below. This is the more practical choice for a ring you wear every day. See half eternity rings, and the guide to eternity and half eternity rings.

Bezel-set bands. Each emerald sits in its own thin gold rim, which is the most protective option for this stone.

Stone shapes include princess, oval, pear, heart and asscher. Princess and asscher cuts form a crisp, square-edged line of green. Oval stones look softer, and pear and heart shapes create a more decorative pattern. Our full range of eternity bands shows other stones set all the way around.

Gold and Emerald

Gold color changes the green more than you might expect.

  • Yellow gold is the traditional partner for emerald. It warms the green and gives the ring a rich, classic look.
  • White gold makes the green look cooler and brighter.
  • Rose gold gives a softer, more unusual contrast.

Emerald Engagement Rings and Other Designs

We do not keep emerald engagement rings in the collection. If you would like one, or any other emerald design, ask about it through our custom design page or send us a message. We typically reply within 24 hours.

Because an engagement ring is worn every day, a center emerald is safest in a protective setting. A bezel or a halo of diamonds guards its edges, and our bezel set engagement rings show what that looks like.

Wearing an Emerald Band With Other Rings

An emerald band beside a diamond engagement ring adds color without competing with the center stone. Match the gold so the two wear evenly. If the engagement ring has a wide or low setting, a curved wedding band may sit closer than a straight one.

Green also pairs well with blue. An emerald band stacked with one of our blue sapphire rings makes a two-color set. For more stacking ideas, see stackable rings.

Emerald as a Gift

Emerald is the birthstone for May, which makes an emerald band a natural birthday or milestone gift. Our birthstone gift guide covers every month, and our anniversary rings for women include other milestone styles.

Caring for an Emerald Ring

Wash it in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, using a soft brush around the stones, then rinse and pat dry. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, avoid sudden changes in temperature, and keep the ring away from household chemicals. Our care guide has more detail.

How to Choose

  1. Think about how you'll wear it. For every day, choose half eternity or a bezel or channel setting.
  2. Choose the pattern. All emerald, or emerald with diamonds.
  3. Choose the stone shape. Princess or asscher for clean lines, oval for softness, pear or heart for pattern.
  4. Choose the gold. Yellow for a classic look, white for a cooler one.
  5. Confirm your size. Measure with our size guide. A full eternity band can't easily be resized later, so check the returns and exchange policy first.
