Pear Shape Diamond Rings for Women

A pear diamond is rounded at one end and pointed at the other, like a teardrop. It sparkles like a round brilliant but draws the eye along the finger, so it looks longer and larger than its carat weight suggests. This collection includes every pear diamond ring we make: engagement rings, eternity bands and pear-shaped colored diamonds, in yellow, white or rose gold. Natural pears go up to 1 carat, and lab-grown pears go up to around 3 carats.

What Makes a Pear Diamond Different

A pear is a modified brilliant, usually with 56 to 58 facets, so it has the bright sparkle of a round. What sets it apart is its asymmetry. One end is curved and one comes to a point, and that combination gives the shape its direction on the hand.

That same asymmetry is why quality varies more between pears than between rounds. Three things decide whether a pear looks good.

Symmetry. The two curved shoulders should match, and the point should line up with the center of the rounded end. A pear with one shoulder higher than the other, or a point that leans, looks lopsided once set.

Length-to-width ratio. Most pears fall between about 1.45 and 1.75. Around 1.50 to 1.65 looks classic. Lower ratios look short and wide, and higher ones look long and slender.

The bow-tie. Like ovals, pears often show a darker band across the widest part. A well-cut stone keeps it faint, so look at a video or several photos before choosing.

Our pear engagement ring buying guide goes into each of these in more detail.

How Big Does a Pear Look?

Pears spread their weight over a long outline, so they look bigger than a round of the same weight. Typical measurements for a well-cut pear (length × width) are:

  • 0.50 ct: about 7.0 × 4.5 mm
  • 0.75 ct: about 8.0 × 5.0 mm
  • 1.00 ct: about 8.5 × 5.5 mm
  • 1.50 ct: about 10.0 × 6.0 mm
  • 2.00 ct: about 11.0 × 7.0 mm
  • 3.00 ct: about 12.0 × 8.0 mm

Exact figures depend on the ratio and depth of each stone.

Natural or Lab-Grown Pears

Natural pear diamonds go up to 1 carat. Any single natural diamond of 0.50 carat or more has an IGI or GIA report, and smaller natural stones come without documentation. See natural diamond rings.

Lab-grown pear diamonds go up to around 3 carats, so they're the way to get a larger pear center stone. Any single lab-grown diamond of 1 carat or more has an IGI report, and smaller lab-grown stones aren't individually certified. See lab-grown diamond rings.

Any ring priced above $800 also comes with a third-party jewelry certificate from GSI.

Protecting the Point

The tip of a pear is its thinnest, most exposed part, and it's where a pear is most likely to chip. Good settings cover it:

  • A V-shaped prong wraps the tip on solitaires and halos.
  • A bezel rims the whole outline, point included.
  • A halo surrounds the edge with small diamonds that take knocks before the center stone does.

Pear Engagement Rings

Pears suit most engagement settings:

  • A solitaire, with a V-prong at the point and two or three prongs around the rounded end.
  • A halo, which traces the teardrop outline and makes the stone look larger.
  • A hidden halo, where the extra diamonds sit under the pear and show only in profile.
  • A bezel, the most protective option for daily wear.
  • Pavé bands, with small diamonds along the shoulders.
  • A toi et moi design that pairs a pear with a second stone.

Colored Pear Diamonds

Many of our pear engagement rings come with a lab-grown fancy color center stone in pink, yellow, blue or green. A colored pear in a white diamond halo is one of the most striking combinations in the collection. See colored lab diamond engagement rings.

Pear Eternity and Wedding Bands

Pear eternity rings. Pear-shaped stones set nose to tail around the band, in diamonds or colored stones. See eternity fashion rings.

Wedding bands for a pear engagement ring. The point of a pear can leave a gap beside a straight band. A V-shaped or curved band fits around it, and a band of small pear stones echoes the center. See pear shape diamond wedding bands, curved wedding bands, and our guide to wedding bands for a pear-shaped ring.

Which Way Should the Point Face?

Traditionally, the point faces toward the fingertip, which makes the finger look longer. Some people prefer it facing the wrist for a softer look, and a few choose east-west, turned sideways across the finger. All three are fine. It comes down to what you like seeing on your hand.

Gold

All pear designs are offered in yellow, white and rose gold, with a choice of 10K, 14K or 18K. White gold keeps a colorless pear crisp, and rose and yellow gold flatter pink and yellow pears.

How to Choose

  1. Pick the ring type. Engagement ring, eternity ring or band.
  2. Choose natural or lab-grown. Natural up to 1 carat, lab-grown up to around 3 carats.
  3. Check symmetry and ratio, then pick a size from the list above.
  4. Choose a setting that protects the point.
  5. Decide which way the point should face.
  6. Measure your finger using our size guide, and look over the returns and exchange policy first.

For cleaning, see the care guide. For a size or setting we don't show, ask about a custom design or send us a message. We typically reply within 24 hours. If you're looking for pear-shaped earrings, necklaces or bracelets, see our pear shape diamond jewelry.
