Ruby Rings for Women

Our ruby rings are set with lab-created rubies, mostly in eternity and half eternity bands. Some rings are all ruby, and others pair red stones with diamonds. They come in gold and in silver, and if you want a ruby engagement ring, we can make one to order.

What Is a Lab-Created Ruby?

Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral, corundum. What makes a ruby red is chromium inside the crystal. A lab-created ruby is grown from aluminum oxide with a touch of chromium added, so it is chemically and physically a ruby. Only its origin is different from a mined stone.

Lab growth also avoids two issues that are common with mined rubies:

  • Heat treatment. Nearly all mined rubies are heated to improve their color, which sellers are expected to disclose.
  • Glass filling. Lower-priced mined rubies are often filled with lead glass to hide fractures. Those stones need special care and can be damaged by heat or some cleaning products.

Lab-created rubies don't need either treatment to reach a strong, even red, and they cost much less than mined rubies of the same color and size.

Why Ruby Suits an Eternity Band

Ruby scores 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, the same as sapphire. That makes it one of the few colored stones tough enough to sit all the way around a band, where every stone takes the knocks of daily life. A ruby band keeps its polish and color for a long time with ordinary care, which is why it works as an everyday ring and not just an occasional one.

Our Ruby Ring Styles

All-ruby eternity bands. A continuous ring of red. See lab-grown ruby rings.

Ruby and diamond bands. Rubies alternating with diamonds, or a band that is half ruby and half diamond. The white stones make the red look brighter. See lab-grown ruby wedding bands and ruby wedding bands.

Half eternity rings. Rubies across the top of the band and plain metal underneath, for a lighter look and a more comfortable fit. See half eternity rings.

Bezel-set bands. Each ruby sits inside its own thin rim of metal, which gives a smooth surface that does not catch on fabric.

Stone shapes include round, oval, princess, emerald, asscher, pear and heart. Small rounds and ovals give a soft line of color. Princess, emerald and asscher cuts make a sharper, more graphic band. Pear and heart shapes read as a pattern rather than a line. For other stones set the whole way around, browse our eternity bands.

Gold or Silver?

Gold is the choice for a ring you plan to wear every day for years. Yellow gold deepens the red, white gold gives a crisp contrast, and rose gold softens it.

Silver costs less and suits a fashion ring or a stacking piece. It is softer than gold and tarnishes over time, so it needs an occasional polish and is better for rings you rotate rather than wear constantly.

Certificates

Our rubies do not come with an individual gemstone certificate. Rings priced above $800 come with a jewelry certificate.

Ruby Engagement Rings, Made to Order

We do not keep ruby engagement rings in the collection, but we can make one as a custom piece. Ruby's hardness means it can sit in an open prong setting as well as a protective bezel or a diamond halo. Tell us the shape, size and metal you have in mind through our custom design page, or send us a message. We typically reply within 24 hours.

Wearing Ruby With Other Rings

Red and white is a strong pairing, so a ruby band sits well beside a diamond engagement ring. Keep the metal the same so the two wear evenly. Ruby also stacks with the other precious stones: a ruby band, a blue sapphire ring and an emerald ring together make a three-color stack. See stackable rings for more slim bands.

Ruby as a Gift

Ruby is the birthstone for July and the traditional gemstone for the 40th wedding anniversary. Our birthstone gift guide covers every month, and our anniversary rings for women include more milestone styles.

Care

Wash a ruby ring in warm water with mild soap, brushing gently between the stones, then rinse and dry. Lab rubies are not oiled or glass-filled, so they handle normal cleaning well. If your ring is silver, a jewelry polishing cloth removes tarnish. Our care guide has more detail.

How to Choose

  1. Choose the coverage. Full eternity for red all the way around, or half eternity for comfort.
  2. Choose the pattern. All ruby, or ruby with diamonds.
  3. Choose the shape. Round or oval for a soft line, princess, emerald or asscher for crisp edges, pear or heart for pattern.
  4. Choose the metal. Gold for daily wear, silver for a lighter-budget fashion ring.
  5. Check your size. Use our size guide. Full eternity bands are difficult to resize, so look at our returns and exchange policy before you order.
