Cushion Cut Engagement Rings for Women
The cushion is the engagement shape with the longest memory. Its softly squared outline and rounded corners descend from the diamonds of the 1800s, cut to glow by candlelight, yet today's cushions are faceted for modern sparkle. Our cushion engagement rings set that shape in solitaire, halo, pavé, bezel and hidden halo designs, with natural, lab-grown or colored centers.
From Candlelight to Now
Before the round brilliant was refined in the early twentieth century, the most prized diamonds were old mine cuts: squarish stones with rounded corners, a high crown and large facets, shaped to make the most of the rough crystal and to flicker in candle and gas light. Many antique engagement rings still carry them.
The modern cushion keeps that pillow-like outline but adds brilliant faceting tuned for electric light, so it sparkles more brightly while still looking softer than a round or princess. That mix of old outline and new fire is why a cushion suits both a vintage-inspired ring and a clean, modern one. Our cushions come in two facet styles, standard with larger facets and "crushed ice" with many small ones, explained in detail on our cushion cut diamond rings page.
Rounded Corners, Everyday Ease
A cushion has no sharp points. Its corners are curved, which makes it one of the most practical shapes to wear every day. There's no tip to chip and no corner to catch on a sweater, and the soft outline sits comfortably beside a wedding band. On the hand it reads as a broad, friendly shape, a little wider than a round of the same weight, so it suits fingers of every length.
Vintage or Modern, Setting by Setting
The setting decides which side of the cushion's character you see.
A solitaire with four claw prongs is the most classic choice, close to the look of an antique ring. Each prong sits at a rounded corner, and the cushion's outline shows in full.
A classic halo frames the stone with small diamonds that follow its softly squared edge. It's the most romantic and vintage-leaning look, and it makes the center appear larger. The halo with a pavé band adds diamonds down the shank for an even fuller ring.
A pavé band without a halo keeps the cushion's own outline crisp while small diamonds lead toward it, a balanced look that's neither plain nor ornate.
A bezel wraps the cushion in a smooth rim of gold, the most modern option and the most protective. The bezel with a pavé band pairs that clean rim with sparkle along the shank. A natural cushion bezel ring with round side diamonds adds a row of rounds beside the center for a little extra width.
A hidden halo tucks small diamonds beneath the stone, visible from the side, so the cushion looks like a solitaire from above with a surprise in profile. Compare each style across every shape in our halo engagement rings and hidden halo engagement rings.
Natural, Lab-Grown or Colored Centers
Every cushion design is offered with one of three kinds of center.
A natural cushion is mined and offered at 1 carat; larger natural cushions can be found for you on request. A natural cushion of half a carat or more is accompanied by an IGI or GIA grading report. Mined options are gathered in our natural diamond engagement rings.
A lab-grown cushion is grown by the CVD method and is diamond through and through. Listed lab-grown cushions reach 3 carats, and stones above that can be grown to order; each lab-grown cushion of 1 carat and up carries an IGI report. Our lab-grown diamond engagement rings show the larger sizes.
A colored cushion places pink, yellow, blue or green at the center in all seven designs. These are lab-grown diamonds colored by treatment after growth, a fact every listing states, even those whose older names omit the word "lab". Colored cushions also run to 3 carats, with larger stones possible on request. The broad face of a cushion shows color generously, making it a natural match for a colored center. See all four in our colored lab diamond engagement rings.
A GSI jewelry certificate is included with every cushion ring above $800. Settings are crafted in 925 sterling silver or in 10K, 14K or 18K gold, yellow, white or rose; yellow gold leans the cushion toward its antique roots, while white gold makes it look crisp and contemporary.
A Band for a Softly Squared Center
Because a cushion is nearly square and sits fairly low in most settings, a straight band usually rests flush beside a solitaire, pavé or bezel design. A halo widens the center, so some brides prefer a slightly curved band, or a thin band that tucks underneath. A row of small round diamonds in the band picks up the cushion's sparkle without competing with its outline; our round diamond wedding bands are a natural partner.
Cushions Made to Your Design
Beyond the listed rings, we can make a cushion engagement ring to your idea. Popular requests include an elongated cushion, a rectangular shape that lengthens the finger, an old-mine-style cushion with large facets and a high crown, a three-stone ring with a cushion at the center, a toi et moi pairing a cushion with a second stone, or an east-west cushion set sideways. We can also source a natural cushion above 1 carat or a lab-grown one above 3. Share your idea with our custom design team. Shipping within the US is free, and international orders are welcome.
