Princess Cut Engagement Rings for Women
A princess cut gives you the bright sparkle of a brilliant in a crisp square, and it usually costs less per carat than a round of the same quality. That difference is what makes the shape so useful: it can go toward a larger center, a halo, a pavé band or a bezel that guards the corners. Our princess engagement rings cover all of those choices in natural and lab-grown diamonds.
Why a Princess Costs Less Than a Round
Diamonds grow as crystals with a shape close to two pyramids joined at the base. Cutting a round brilliant from that crystal trims away a lot of material, while a square princess follows the crystal's outline far more closely and keeps more of its weight. Less waste means a lower cost per finished carat, so at the same color and clarity a princess is usually priced below a round.
What you see on the hand doesn't suffer for it. A well-cut princess is a full brilliant, with facets that run in chevrons from the center to the corners and throw back plenty of light. The four corners are its one weak point, and every one of our settings includes metal at those corners. The shape's details, including square versus rectangular outlines, are on our princess cut diamond rings page.
Three Ways to Spend the Difference
On a larger center
The solitaire puts the saving where it shows most: in the center stone. With nothing around it, a princess solitaire shows its full square outline and sparkle, held at the corners by V-shaped prongs. We make it in natural and lab-grown diamonds, and a lab-grown version adds a pavé band for a little more light along the finger. A square solitaire also has a quiet, architectural confidence: no frame, no extra stones, just clean lines and sparkle. On the hand, a princess reads slightly smaller across than a round of the same weight, because more of its weight sits below the surface, so many buyers use the saving to move up a little in carat. Compare single-stone designs across shapes in our solitaire engagement rings.
On more sparkle
The halo frames the square in small diamonds, making the center look noticeably larger for a modest extra cost, and the halo with a pavé band carries the sparkle down the shank as well. The pavé band on its own keeps the princess outline crisp while small stones lead toward it. These are the designs to choose if you'd rather have a fuller ring than a bigger center. Because the halo follows the princess's straight edges, it keeps the square outline sharp rather than softening it the way a halo softens a round or oval, so the ring still reads clearly as a princess from across a room. More are gathered in our halo engagement rings.
On protection
The bezel wraps the whole square in a smooth rim of gold, covering all four corners, and the bezel with a pavé band adds sparkle to that protective frame. Hidden halo designs tuck small diamonds beneath the stone so the profile flashes while the top looks like a clean solitaire; one of our lab-grown hidden halos is also bezel-set for extra security. These suit active hands and anyone who wants a ring that's easy to forget about. Our bezel-set engagement rings show the style across shapes.
Natural or Lab-Grown Centers
Each design can be ordered with a natural or a lab-grown center.
A natural princess is mined and offered at 1 carat, with bigger natural stones sourced on request. Every natural princess from half a carat upward comes with an IGI or GIA report. Mined designs are in our natural diamond engagement rings.
A lab-grown princess is grown by the CVD method and is a true diamond, identical in hardness and sparkle. Listed sizes go to 3 carats, with larger stones to order, and an IGI report accompanies every lab-grown princess of a carat or more. For a princess over 1 carat, lab-grown is the route here, and our lab-grown diamond engagement rings show those larger sizes.
Princess rings over $800 include a GSI jewelry certificate. Every design is made in 925 sterling silver or in 10K, 14K or 18K yellow, white or rose gold. White gold sharpens the square's crisp lines, while yellow gold warms them.
A Princess Band Beside It
Princess cuts are a natural fit for wedding bands, because their straight sides let squares sit flush in a row with almost no metal showing. A band of small princess stones beside a princess engagement ring repeats the same shape and makes the two read as a set. Most of our princess designs sit flat enough for a straight band to rest right against them. Explore our princess cut wedding bands.
Princesses Made to Your Design
Beyond the listed rings, we can make a princess engagement ring to your idea: a colored lab-grown princess center in pink, yellow, blue or green, colored by treatment after growth; an on-point or compass-set princess turned 45 degrees so it reads as a diamond shape; a three-stone ring with a princess at the center; a toi et moi pairing a princess with a second stone; or an east-west rectangular princess set sideways. We can also source a natural princess above 1 carat or a lab-grown one above 3. Share your idea with our custom design team. Orders within the US ship at no charge, and we also send rings abroad.
