    What Are Lab Diamonds?

    As you know, diamonds are found on the Earth through mining. Those diamonds that are found beneath the Earth are called natural diamonds. Lab diamonds are made in laboratories, and they are real diamonds.

    These diamonds are made by mimicking the same phenomenon that occurs in nature and takes billions of years. Lab-grown diamonds are, in short, the result of technological advancement. We can create a diamond within a few weeks or months, with less investment and less environmental disruption than traditional diamond mining. 

    Lab diamonds are made using two techniques, and both of them imitate the natural processes involved in diamond formation to create diamonds.

    How Are Lab Diamonds Made?

    Lab diamonds are primarily made using two methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Both methods recreate key conditions involved in natural diamond formation, but they use very different technologies to grow the diamond.

    HPHT

    HPHT stands for “High Pressure High Temperature.” In this process, a small diamond seed is placed inside a growth chamber. Alongside the diamond seed, there is a carbon source such as graphite and a metal mixture of iron, cobalt, or nickel.

    The growth chamber is then exposed to temperatures of 1,300 to 1,600°C and pressures of 850,000+ psi. Under these conditions, the metal mixture helps dissolve the carbon and allows it to move toward the diamond seed, where it gradually crystallizes around it, forming a rough diamond layer by layer.

    Once the rough diamond has finished growing, it is removed from the chamber and can then be cut and polished just like a natural diamond.

    CVD

    CVD stands for “Chemical Vapour Deposition.” In this process, thin diamond seed crystals are placed inside a sealed chamber. The chamber is heated to around 800°C to 1,200°C, and a gas mixture containing methane and hydrogen is introduced. 

    The chamber is then exposed to microwaves, which turn the gases into a hot plasma.  The microwave breaks the methane and releases carbon atoms. These carbon atoms slowly settle onto the diamond seeds and bond with them, following the same crystal structure. 

    The diamond gradually grows layer by layer over several weeks, eventually forming a rough diamond crystal. Meanwhile, hydrogen helps prevent unwanted graphite from building up during the process. 

    Lab Diamonds vs Natural Diamonds

    There is no significant gap between lab diamonds and natural diamonds. As we discussed, the only differences between them are their origin, creation time, rarity, and cost. Natural diamonds are rarer and not available in abundance, so their supply chain is tighter than that of lab diamonds, and hence, they are priced higher. Physically and chemically, they are identical.

    How Much Do Lab Diamonds Cost?

    The cost of lab diamonds depends on their 4Cs: cut, color, carat, and clarity. This 4C grading system was developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to help consumers understand and evaluate a diamond's quality.

    However, the final price of a lab diamond can also depend on factors such as its shape, certification, and current market conditions. Lab diamonds are generally 30%–40% less expensive than natural diamonds of similar quality, although the price difference can vary.

    According to live pricing data from DiamondPrice, a 1-carat, I-color, SI1-clarity natural diamond is currently being sold for around $2,600–$4,000. On the other hand, a lab-grown diamond with the same carat weight, color, and clarity can cost around $500.

    Are Lab Diamonds Worth It?

    Lab diamonds are worth it if your purpose is acquiring sparkling jewelry at a much more affordable price point. As lab diamonds are cheaper, you can buy the highest quality of real diamonds for less. 

    For example, someone with a $3,000 budget may have to compromise on carat weight or quality when buying a natural diamond. With a lab diamond, the same budget can give you more flexibility in choosing the size and quality of the stone.

    How to Choose a High-Quality Lab Diamond

    People usually think that the diamond with a better grading number is a high-quality diamond. This is true but only on paper. High-quality lab diamond means one that gives you the appearance and performance you want at a price you are comfortable paying.   Before buying a lab diamond, pay attention to these factors:

    • Cut: Look for a diamond with good proportions and strong light performance.

    • Buy under the carat milestones: Purchase "shy" weights like 0.88 ct or 1.90 ct instead of 1.00 ct or 2.00 ct.

    • Prioritize Cut over everything else: A lower-color diamond with an "Ideal" or "Excellent" cut reflects more light, hiding yellow tints and inclusions.

    • Spread over depth: Look for stones with a slightly shallower cut depth within excellent parameters to get a larger face-up diameter.

    • The halo effect: Surround a 0.50 ct center stone with a halo of tiny pavé diamonds to mimic the visual size of a 1.50 ct stone.

    • Fancy shapes look bigger: Marquise, oval, pear, and emerald cuts look larger than round diamonds of the same carat weight.

    • Eye-clean SI1 or SI2: Look for SI1 or SI2 clarity grades where the inclusions are on the outer edges, not under the center table.

    Lab Diamond Certification: IGI vs GIA

    A grading report is useful because it gives you an independent assessment of important details such as the diamond's 4Cs, measurements, proportions, and other identifying characteristics. Two main organizations are handling lab-grown diamond grading and certification: IGI and GIA.

    For lab-grown diamond grading, IGI is more popular. IGI grades lab-grown diamonds based on the 4Cs. GIA, on the other hand, also evaluates lab-grown diamonds based on their 4Cs. However, GIA reports clearly classify the stone as a lab-grown diamond, while IGI reports also identify the stone as a lab-grown diamond while providing its 4Cs and other grading details.

    • The report number.

    • Carat weight.

    • Color grade.
