    A lab-grown diamond isn't a cubic zirconia imitation or a diamond look-alike. It is a diamond created through technology rather than geological processes. Its chemical and physical properties are essentially the same as those of a natural diamond, although specialized gemological testing can distinguish the two by their growth characteristics. 

    So the real question isn't whether one is a "real" diamond and the other isn't. The better question to ask yourself while choosing a diamond for an engagement ring is:

    Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

    Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. It isn't a simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. A natural diamond forms through geological processes inside the Earth. A laboratory-grown diamond is produced under controlled conditions designed to reproduce the environment needed for diamond growth. 

    GIA describes laboratory-grown diamonds as having essentially the same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds, while also noting that their growth conditions leave identifying characteristics that can be detected with appropriate equipment.

    That gives us three very different categories:

    • Natural diamond: formed naturally in the Earth.

    • Lab-grown diamond: grown by humans using diamond-growth technology.

    • Diamond simulant: a different material that resembles diamond.

    That third category is where the confusion often begins. Moissanite, for example, can be an excellent gemstone, but it isn't diamond. Cubic zirconia isn't diamond either. Their chemical and physical properties are different.

    So if you're comparing a lab-grown diamond with a natural diamond for an engagement ring, you're comparing two types of diamond, not a diamond with an imitation. In other words, the difference between a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond is primarily their origin and growth history, not whether the material is diamond. 

    How Are Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?

    The biggest fundamental difference between these two types of diamond happens before the diamond ever reaches a jeweler's display case.

    How natural diamonds form

    Natural diamonds form deep within the Earth under extremely high pressure and temperature. Geological processes can then transport diamond-bearing material toward the Earth's surface, where diamonds can eventually be recovered through mining.

    How lab-grown diamonds are grown 

    Lab-grown diamonds are created with diamond material and are grown under controlled conditions. The two principal methods used for gem-quality laboratory-grown diamonds are:

    • HPHT - High Pressure High Temperature

    • CVD - Chemical Vapor Deposition

    HPHT recreates extremely high pressure and temperature conditions inside specialized equipment. CVD uses a carbon-containing gas in a controlled chamber to grow diamond material onto a diamond seed. GIA identifies both as the principal laboratory-growth methods and can determine the growth method through advanced analysis. 

    The finished stone is then cut and polished just like a natural diamond. And that's where an interesting thing happens. Once both stones have been cut into, say, round brilliant diamonds, their origin isn't something your eyes can reliably determine.

    What Are HPHT and CVD Diamonds?

    If you've been shopping for lab-grown diamonds, you've probably seen these two abbreviations everywhere.

    HPHT: High Pressure High Temperature

    HPHT technology uses high pressure and high temperature to create conditions in which diamond can grow. It was developed partly by recreating aspects of the conditions under which natural diamonds form.

    CVD: Chemical Vapor Deposition

    CVD uses a controlled chamber containing carbon-containing gas. Energy is introduced to create the conditions for carbon to deposit and grow onto a diamond seed. Both methods can produce gem-quality diamonds.

    GIA's research also shows that the two growth processes leave different characteristics that can help gemologists identify them.  For you as an engagement-ring buyer, though, you don't need to become a CVD or HPHT expert.

    The more useful question is: What is the quality of this particular diamond, and is its laboratory-grown origin clearly disclosed and documented?

    Can You Tell a Lab-Grown Diamond From a Natural Diamond?

    No, not reliably by looking at it alone. This is one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding lab-grown diamonds. A well-cut lab-grown diamond can have the same visual qualities as a natural diamond: brilliance, fire, and scintillation. 

    GIA notes that laboratory-grown diamonds can share essentially the same optical and physical properties as natural diamonds and that distinguishing them can require sophisticated equipment. 

    So if someone puts two similarly well-cut diamonds in front of you, one lab-grown and one natural, you shouldn't expect to identify the origin simply by looking at them. That doesn't mean the stones are impossible to distinguish.

    It means the clues aren't necessarily visible to your eyes.

    Gemological laboratories examine things such as growth patterns, inclusions, fluorescence, strain patterns, and other characteristics. Laboratory-grown diamonds do carry a laser inscription identifying their laboratory-grown status and report number.

    Does a Lab-Grown Diamond Sparkle as Much as a Natural Diamond?

    It can. And this is where we want to separate diamond origin from diamond quality. A lab-grown diamond isn't more sparkly because it's lab-grown, and a natural diamond isn't more beautiful because it came from the Earth. Sparkle depends on how the diamond is cut and how its proportions interact with light. 

    Two diamonds can have the same:

    • carat weight

    • color grade

    • clarity grade

    • shape

    and still look different because their cutting quality and proportions differ. That's why we'd never recommend choosing a diamond based on origin alone. If sparkle is your priority, pay attention to cut quality, proportions, and overall visual performance.

    Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: Which Is More Durable?

    Are lab-grown diamonds durable enough for engagement rings? Yes. For everyday wear, both lab-grown and natural diamonds are highly durable choices. Diamond is exceptionally hard, and both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are diamond material. The difference in origin doesn't suddenly make a lab-grown diamond unsuitable for everyday wear.

    But there's an important distinction between hardness and overall ring durability.

    Your diamond can be extremely resistant to scratching while the rest of your ring remains vulnerable to wear. Prongs can loosen. A thin band can bend. A high setting can catch on clothing. A pointed diamond shape can be more vulnerable to impact at its tip.

    So when we're talking about how long an engagement ring will last, we shouldn't look only at the diamond. We should also consider:

    Do Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds Have the Same 4Cs?

    So when comparing lab-grown diamond quality with natural diamond quality, the same four fundamentals still matter. :

    • Clarity

    • Carat weight

    But your priorities within those four factors can change depending on your budget.

    Cut

    If sparkle matters to you, this deserves serious attention. A larger diamond with mediocre cutting isn't a better-looking diamond than a smaller diamond with excellent light performance.

    Color

    The color grade describes how much body color is visible in a diamond within the grading system being used. Your choice can also interact with:

    • diamond shape

    • metal color

    • personal preference

    Clarity

    Clarity describes internal and external characteristics within the diamond. You don't necessarily need the highest clarity grade to get a diamond that looks clean to the naked eye. That can be particularly useful when you're trying to balance clarity against size or other priorities.

    Carat is weight, not visual size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can have different face-up dimensions depending on their shape and proportions. This matters because one of the biggest attractions of lab-grown diamonds is often the ability to choose a larger stone without increasing the budget to the same extent. So don't let carat become the only number you're shopping by.

    Does a Natural Diamond Have Better Resale Value?

    Natural diamonds generally have a more established secondary market, so they may have stronger resale recognition than lab-grown diamonds. But that doesn't mean either type of diamond has a guaranteed resale value, but this is an area where we need to be careful. 

    You may come across neat claims online such as:

    "Natural diamonds retain X% of their value."

    or:

    "Lab-grown diamonds lose X%."

    Those numbers can sound reassuringly precise. The reality is messier. Retail price, appraisal value, insurance value, and resale price are not the same thing.

    A jeweler might appraise a ring at one amount for insurance purposes, while a buyer in the secondary market may be willing to pay considerably less. A retailer's trade-in or upgrade policy is also a separate calculation.

    Lab-grown diamonds face another challenge: their market is relatively young, and their pricing has changed substantially as production has expanded. That makes long-term resale behavior difficult to summarize with one universal percentage.

    That information can be much more useful than a generic internet resale percentage. 

    Are Natural Diamonds More Valuable Because They're Rare?

    Rarity is one reason natural diamonds have a different market valuation. Natural diamonds depend on geological deposits. Their supply isn't something manufacturers can simply increase by installing additional growth equipment.

    Lab-grown diamonds are different because their supply comes from manufacturing capacity. That doesn't mean every natural diamond is rare in the collector's sense, either. A common commercial-quality natural diamond isn't comparable to an exceptionally rare natural diamond with unusual color, size, provenance, or characteristics.

    For an engagement-ring buyer, the question becomes: Does the fact that your diamond formed naturally over geological time add something meaningful to the ring for you? If the answer is yes, that can be a good reason to choose natural diamonds.

    Are Lab-Grown or Natural Diamonds More Ethical and Environmentally Responsible? 

    This is probably the area where you'll encounter the strongest marketing claims, and where a little skepticism is healthy. The environmental impact of lab-grown vs natural diamonds depends on how each diamond is produced, sourced, transported, and processed.  Neither is a sufficiently complete explanation.

    Ethical considerations

    For natural diamonds, questions can include:

    • where the diamond came from

    • how it was sourced

    • labor conditions

    • mining practices

    • supply-chain transparency

    • community impact

    The diamond industry has established systems and regulations intended to address responsible sourcing, but the ethicalness depends on the source and supply chain.

    Environmental considerations

    Natural diamond mining can involve:

    • land disturbance

    • energy use

    • water use

    • extraction and processing

    • transportation

    Laboratory production avoids mining the diamond from the ground, but it requires industrial equipment and energy. The environmental impact of a lab-grown diamond isn't a single fixed number.

    It depends on factors including the growth technology, facility efficiency, and the electricity used to power production.

    Research comparing diamond production methods has found significant variation in energy use between mining and different laboratory-growth methods. A 2021 study, for example, found that energy consumption for laboratory-grown diamonds varied substantially depending on the technology and operating conditions. 

    A 2024 peer-reviewed study likewise concluded that lab-grown production has its own resource and capital requirements rather than being environmentally impact-free.  So if environmental impact is a major part of your decision, don't settle for a simple label.

    Ask where and how the diamond was produced. That gives you a much more meaningful answer.

    Does Certification Matter for Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds?

    Yes, and this is one area where we don't recommend cutting corners. A diamond grading report gives you an independent record of important characteristics and, depending on the laboratory and report type, information about the diamond's origin and growth method.

    GIA has graded laboratory-grown diamonds since 2007, and its laboratory-grown reports identify the growth process as HPHT or CVD and disclose relevant post-growth treatment information where applicable. 

    When you're checking a diamond certification, look for clear disclosure that the stone is laboratory-grown. For either type of diamond, check that:

    • the report belongs to the actual stone

    • the report number matches the documentation/inscription where applicable

    • the stated shape and measurements correspond to the diamond

    • the 4Cs are clearly documented

    • the seller's description matches the report

    The Federal Trade Commission also requires jewelry marketers to accurately represent characteristics including a diamond's type, quality, origin, price and value, and its Jewelry Guides address disclosure of laboratory-created and imitation gemstones. 

    That's good news for you as a buyer. You shouldn't have to guess what you're purchasing.

    What About the Ring Setting?

    You're buying an engagement ring, not a loose diamond floating in a spreadsheet. The setting changes how the finished ring looks and how it wears. A larger center stone might require different proportions in the setting. A delicate band may look completely different with a substantial center diamond than it does with a smaller stone.

    Your choices include:

    A lab-grown diamond doesn't make the rest of the ring inexpensive. A beautifully crafted platinum setting with detailed diamond work can still represent a substantial part of the overall price. This is another reason not to compare the two diamond origins using carat weight alone. Look at the finished ring.

    • spending less on the center stone

    • putting more money into the setting

    • keeping the overall ring budget lower

    • choosing a diamond without placing importance on natural geological origin

    Choose a natural diamond if you prioritize:

    • natural geological origin

    • rarity

    • tradition

    • the story of a stone formed within the Earth

    • the established natural-diamond market

    • the emotional significance you personally attach to natural origin

    Consider whether your priorities are mainly:

    • sparkle

    • beauty

    • durability

    • cut quality

    • ring design

    • symbolism

    • finding the best stone within your budget

    In that situation, compare individual diamonds rather than assuming one category is better. A beautifully cut lab-grown diamond can be a better choice for you than a poorly selected natural diamond.
